The Beast in the Cellar
While ‘70s UK horror was dominated by Hammer and Amicus, a third studio – Tigon British – produced several of the most acclaimed shockers of the decade including WITCHFINDER GENERAL, THE BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW and this still-creepy favorite: Beryl Reid (PSYCHOMANIA, THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE) and Flora Robson (BLACK NARCISSUS, EYE OF THE DEVIL) star as spinster sisters who keep a disturbing secret bricked up in their basement. But what exactly is this macabre creature, and has it escaped to commit a series of grisly murders? John Hamill (NO BLADE OF GRASS) and T.P. McKenna (STRAW DOGS) co-star in this hag-horror hit from writer/director James Kelly (WHAT THE PEEPER SAW) with cinematography by Desmond Dickinson (THE CITY OF THE DEAD) and Harry Waxman (THE WICKER MAN), now featuring a 4k scan from the original negative.
